The Group is based on the city of Manchester in the Northwest of England. As well as Manchester it contains the SK8 region of Stockport. There are several thousand members in the group who are all regularly sent leaflets on group activities throughout the year.

The Manchester group contains Didsbury within it's boundaries, where the founding meetings of the RSPB were held over a hundred years ago. Initially these were to attack the millinary trade's use of rare birds' feathers in the manufacture of hats but, of course, the organisation's activities rapidly spread from this limited aim to one of active intervention to save birds' habitats and research into their migration patterns in cooperation with international partners.

The Group Leader, Peter Wolstenholme, has been an active Ornithologist from his earliest years. Whilst working he took advantage of long school holidays to further his interest by travelling to foreign countries and leading evening classes in Ornithology for the Manchester branch of the WEA. Since retiring from teaching he has expanded these lectures.

21/11/2009 to 30/11/2009	Altrincham Library	The successful joint Charities Christmas Card Shop will be open in Altrincham Library. Many charities including the RSPB will have cards on sale and there will be other items. We are manning the shop on Wednesday 11th November 2009	The shop will be online at Charities Card Shop
21/11/2009 to 27/11/2009	Sale Library	We will be taking part in a Joint Charities Christmas Card Shop in Sale Library and manning the shop on Wednesday 18th November.
21/11/2009 to 30/11/2009	Hale Library	There is a Joint Charities Christmas Card Shop in Hale Library (closed Wednesdays and Thursday afternoons). We will be manning the shop on Tuesday 24th November.
24/11/2009	St James Parish Church Hall	An illustrated talk by Dr Kevin Briggs, 'Confessions of a Lunatic - bird studies on the Lune Valley'. At St James Parish Church Hall. £2.00 for hall and tea and biscuits. There will be RSPB Sales
28/11/2009	Parrs Wood Rural Studies Centre site	We will have a stall at the Christmas Fair of the Friends of Parrs Wood Rural Studies Centre.
06/12/2009	Gateway Hotel car park	A morning, by car, at Pennington Flash Nature Reserve led by Tony Coatsworth. Possible species include ducks, willow tit, bullfinch, water rail. Meet at the Gateway Hotel car park at 8:30.	Please call Tony Coatsworth during the week prior to the trip on 0161 718 7115
16/01/2010 to 17/01/2010		A weekend trip to the Solway, led by Peter Wolstenholme and staying one night at Castle Douglas. The coach leaves 7:30 a.m. Saturday, picking up at Cheadle Hulme Precinct, Gatley Crossroads and the Gateway Hotel, East Didsbury, and returns approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening weather and traffic permitting. We hope to visit the Solway coast, Loch Ken area, lauriston Hills, Murray's Monument area and Carlaverock. Possible species include geese, red kite, raptors, swans, barn owls, ducks and waders. 25/01/2010	Hough End Centre, Mauldeth Road West Manchester M21 7SX	Film Premiere - Gordon Yates presents his new film 'Bird Life through 40 Penine Years' in the Anderton Suite, Hough End Centre, Mauldeth Road West, Manchester M21 7SX. Gordon will be selling photographs and DVDs and there will be an RSPB sales counter. Please note due to space limitations and the popularity of this event, this is an all-ticket event. Tickets are £5.00 and include refreshments (but not drinks).	Tickets are available by post from Mrs B Borthwick, 8 Norwood Road, Gatley, Cheadle, SK8 4AJ (pleaes include an sae). Cheques to be made out to RSPB Manchester Local Group.

04/05/2010		A trip to Scotland led by Peter Wolstenholme and staying five nights at Grantown-on-Spey. The coach leaves 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday picking up at the Gateway Hotel and Gatley Crossroads and returns at approximately 8:00 p.m. Sunday. Possible species include sea eagle, divers, merganzers, puffin, black gullimot, osprey, capercallie, black grouse and crested tit. Last year's trip recorded over 120 species. The hall is behind the church, accessed from a side road. There is no parking in the hall yard itself but there is parking space across the main road from the Church or in the surrounding roads.
